Comparison Is the Thief of Joy…Until You Learn How To Use It

“Comparison is the thief of joy.”

I’ve heard that quote more times than I can count, and every single time it has struck a chord.

For most of my 40 years, I’ve tried to stay in my own lane. That doesn’t mean I’ve never looked over at someone else’s. I’m human!

Like so many of us, I’m active on social media. I’m a content creator (self-proclaimed… 😂), and while I genuinely enjoy sharing my journey, social media can be a dangerous place. We’re constantly scrolling through everyone else’s highlight reel while quietly comparing it to the behind-the-scenes moments of our own lives.

Whenever I catch myself slipping into that mindset, I remind myself of three things:

● I’m walking in my purpose.

● I’m staying steadfast in my faith.

● What’s meant for me will never miss me.

Those reminders usually bring me back to center.

But then I became a professional bodybuilder.

Suddenly, I entered a sport where comparison isn’t just common, it’s literally part of the competition.

Competitors stand side by side on stage during a process called comparisons. Judges evaluate physiques against one another to determine placement. In bodybuilding, comparison isn’t optional. It’s built into the sport.

Naturally, you start sizing people up.

You compare conditioning.

You compare muscle development.

You compare symmetry.

You compare posing.

You compare confidence.

At first, it feels like part of the game.

But at what point does healthy comparison become unhealthy comparison?

When do you have to check yourself before you wreck yourself?

That moment came for me recently.

I’m seven weeks away from my first professional competition.

Instead of focusing solely on improving my own physique, I found myself following more and more competitors on social media. To be clear, I genuinely love this community. I love seeing women work hard, accomplish impossible goals, and celebrate one another.

But then…

I stumbled across a profile that humbled me.

Not in the inspiring kind of way.

In the “What am I even doing?” kind of way.

Within seconds, my confidence started unraveling.

Maybe you’ve experienced this too.

You see someone who’s stronger.

Leaner.

Further ahead.

More successful.

More accomplished.

More polished.

Suddenly, you start questioning everything you’ve built.

You mentally hand them the trophy before you’ve even stepped onto the stage. You accept defeat before the competition has even begun. That’s the dangerous part. Comparison doesn’t just steal your joy. It steals your belief. And once your belief disappears, your performance often follows.

Can You Relate?

  • 0%Yes

  • 0%No

The irony is that nothing about you changed.

Your physique didn’t disappear.

Your preparation didn’t suddenly become worthless.

Your accomplishments didn’t evaporate because someone else looked amazing.

The only thing that changed…

…was your perspective.

The Mind Is the First Muscle to Train

Whether you’re a bodybuilder, entrepreneur, executive, athlete, parent, or someone chasing a dream, success requires more than talent.

It requires mental toughness.

It requires emotional resilience.

It requires sportsmanship.

It requires faith beyond what you can currently see.

It requires audacity; the willingness to believe you belong, even when you’re standing next to someone extraordinary.

Your greatest competition has never been the person standing beside you.

It’s the voice inside your head telling you that you don’t belong.

Turn Comparison into Inspiration

Comparison isn’t always bad.

Sometimes it’s information.

Ask yourself:

● What can I learn from this person?

● What habits helped them get here?

● What can I apply to my own journey?

● How can I admire without diminishing myself?

The goal isn’t to pretend remarkable people don’t exist.

The goal is to let their success expand your belief about what’s possible instead of shrinking your confidence.

Their win doesn’t cancel yours.

There is room for both of you.

Stay in Your Own Lane

One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned during competition prep is that someone will almost always have something you don’t.

  1. Better genetics.

  2. More years of experience.

  3. A different body structure.

  4. More muscle maturity.

  5. A larger social media following.

  6. Better lighting.

  7. Better angles.

  8. Better timing.

None of those things change what you are capable of bringing to the stage.

You don’t win by becoming someone else.

You win by becoming the best version of yourself.

My Promise to Myself

Seven weeks from now, I will walk onto that stage knowing one thing:

✔️I did everything I could.

✔️I honored the process.

✔️I respected my competitors. But I never surrendered my confidence to them.

Because confidence isn’t arrogance.

Confidence is trusting the work you’ve put in.

Whether I leave with a trophy or not, I refuse to let comparison rob me of the joy that brought me here in the first place.

So if you’re reading this and you’ve been scrolling, comparing, doubting, or quietly convincing yourself that someone else’s greatness somehow makes you smaller…

Stop. ❌

Close the app.📲

Take a deep breath.😮‍💨

Go do the work.💪🏾

Your journey deserves your attention more than someone else’s highlight reel.

And remember this:

Comparison may be part of the process.

But confidence is a choice.

Choose confidence.

Every single day. 📆
